Ea, the water bearer god

The name Aquarius is latin for "water-carrier" or "cup-carrier", represented by the the God Ea, the water bearer pouring water out of an overflowing vase.
For the Babylonians Ea was the ruler of the winter solstice and was associated with the harsh floods that Babylonians endured, and was seen as destructive and unpredictable.

The flood of the Nile

The Egyptians associated Aquarius with the annual flood of the Nile, making the Earth fertile and rich in nutrients for agriculture, signifying change, renovation and making room for the new.
In Greek mythology Aquarius is sometimes associated with Deucalion, Ganymede and Cecrops I.

Aquarius Birthstones

Amethyst cluster

Because Aquarius birth dates occur in two different months, Aquarius is considered both a January zodiac sign as much as it is a February sign, Garnets and Amethysts are the Ancient birthstones for these months. From the 15th to 20th Century Pearls were added to the list of birthstones for Aquarius (which is odd since pearls are not stones nor crystals). The current belief adds Hematite and Amber to Amethyst and Garnet.

Aquarius Personality traits

Although the Water Bearer is clearly manipulating water and is associated with floods in Ancient culture, Aquarius is an Air sign due it's visionary and innovative nature, characteristic to Air signs (The Air Zodiac signs are Libra, Aquarius and Gemini)

Aquarius Traits are about going the road less traveled, being unorthodox, being in the vanguard and the cutting edge of things, constantly challenging the status quo, sometimes is hard to get an idea out of their mind. Aquarius people are also all about their community, they're naturally popular and give great important to the social aspect, their relationship with friends and teams.

Aquarius are all about community

Curiously enough, those born under this sign have a hard time with real intimacy, and sometimes it can take a lot of effort to get through their hearts. Good news for the ladies, this aspect of the Aquarius man personality isn't impossible to break and once you break through it, the Aquarius man can obsess over that one special person and all the unemotional and insensitive way of being melts away (for that one person).

Intimacy

Because Aquarius sign people are uncomfortable with too much intimacy, it's not uncommon for them to see themselves lonely and feeling disconnected from others, who will in turn perceive them as cold, irrational, out of touch and even a little moody or anxious. Their worst nightmare besides broken promises are feeling loneliness, boredom or any type of limitations and constrains - physical, emotional or intellectual.
