Serpentine has this name due it's resemblance to a serpent's skin, and in ancient times was believed to cure poison, and amulets carved out f Serpentine were worn to protect against snakebites.
Serpentine is known to mankind for a while, it was an important gemstone to the Assyrians back in 4000 BCE; the 30th chapter of the Egyptian book of dead was carved out of a Serpentine tablet; and was prized by the Aztecs as they did to all green stones. Rasputin also was really into Serpentine, and was said to request an entire dining set carved out of green Serpentine.
